Water filters that remove fluoride in Australia: what works and what doesn't

Reverse osmosis, distillers, activated alumina, jugs and shower filters compared. Plus the certifications to look for.

If you want fluoride out of your drinking water, the type of filter matters far more than the brand. Most jug and fridge filters sold in Australia are not designed to remove it.

The quick comparison

Does reverse osmosis remove fluoride?

Yes, RO is the most practical household method. But not all RO is equal. Look for independent certification to NSF/ANSI 58 that specifically lists fluoride reduction, and replace pre-filters and membranes when the manufacturer says. A tired membrane can let much more through.

Filters that remove both fluoride and chlorine

Australian tap water is disinfected with chlorine or chloramine, and many people want both gone. No single filter medium does both well, so look for multi-stage systems:

Chloramine, which some Australian utilities use, is harder to remove than chlorine and needs catalytic carbon. Ask your utility which disinfectant it uses.

Certifications that matter

Test, don't guess

Home fluoride test kits are cheap. Test your tap water and your filtered water side by side. If your town doesn't add fluoride at all, you may not need a fluoride filter. Check your town first.
